Engineer’s Day 2024: Celebrating the Visionaries Who Build Our Future

Why is Engineer’s Day Celebrated on September 15?

Engineer’s Day in India is celebrated on September 15th every year to honor the birth anniversary of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, a pioneering engineer and statesman. In 1968, the Government of India declared this day as Engineer’s Day to recognize and appreciate the contributions of engineers who have played a crucial role in building a modern and developed India.

The Legacy of Sir M Visvesvaraya

Early Life and Education

Sir M Visvesvaraya was born in 1861 in a Telugu family in Chikkaballapur, Karnataka, about 60 km from Bengaluru. After completing his formal education in his hometown, he pursued a BA at the University of Madras. However, his passion for engineering led him to switch to a diploma in civil engineering at the College of Science in Pune.

Remarkable Contributions

Following a catastrophic flood in Hyderabad in 1908, the Nizam of Hyderabad sought Sir Visvesvaraya’s expertise to design a drainage system to protect the city from future floods. He proposed the construction of storage reservoirs and built a sewage farm outside the city to prevent pollution of the Musi River.

Honors and Recognition

Sir M Visvesvaraya received the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, in 1955. He was also conferred the British knighthood and served as the Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918. His visionary approach to engineering and public service continues to inspire generations.
